Coloma ValleyColoma Valley - Gold Country

Nestled in California's Sierra foothills, in the fabled Gold Country, lies the Coloma Valley.  The South Fork of the American River - made famous in 1848 when gold was discovered in its stream bed at Sutter's Mill - runs right down the center of the valley.  That discovery triggered the famed California Gold Rush in 1849.  Today, the communities of Coloma and Lotus, with their ranches, orchards, B&Bs, campgrounds, businesses and the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park brings California history to life! The American River is also well-known for its whitewater rapids.  The fun begins only an hour from Sacramento and 2 to 3 hours from San Francisco...and just a hop skip and a jump from Placerville!
